Downtown Bonita Springs This Summer: Where the Calendar Moved While Riverside Park Is Closed

If you live within walking distance of Old 41, you have been watching the construction fence around Riverside Park go up in stages since April. The event lawn, the Bandshell, the Liles Hotel plaza, the paths you use for the Wednesday walk to the Farmers Market: all of it is behind chain link until winter. Construction fencing went up around the park and work began on-site after City Council originally approved funding for the final design, permitting, and construction in September 2024. Riverside Park renovation entered phase 2 for construction in April 2026, with construction running April 2026 through November 2026.

Here is the useful surprise. The downtown calendar did not thin out. It moved.

The park closed. The neighborhood kept going.

For most of the last decade, a shorthand held: downtown Bonita Springs meant Riverside Park. Star Spangled Bonita, Movies in the Park, Taste of Bonita, the Concert Band series, Celebrate Bonita, the Holiday Stroll. Most city special events are held at this park, including Celebrate Bonita, Star Spangled Bonita, Taste of Bonita, and Movies in the Park. Take the park offline for eight months and, on paper, that should be a quiet summer.

It is not. What the closure has exposed is how much of downtown life has already migrated a block or two away from the Bandshell and onto operator-run venues along Old 41 and the Imperial River. The park was the anchor. It is no longer the whole tenant list.

Where the calendar actually lives now

If you are trying to plan a Wednesday, a Thursday, or a Saturday night through the fall, here is the current shape of downtown without the park at its center.

Add Arts Bonita and the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs on Bonita Beach Road, which run their own theatre and performance schedule independent of anything happening at Riverside. Frozen: The Broadway Musical at Arts Bonita Actors Theatre is on the summer calendar at the Centers for the Arts.

The pattern to notice is that private operators are now producing a nightly calendar that used to require a city event to draw a crowd. That is a structural change in how downtown works, and the park closure is what made it legible.

Two dates worth putting on the fridge

For residents who like to keep a short list of anchor evenings during the slower months, two are worth flagging now. Aqua on Crown Lake has the Dazzling Delrays live on August 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., dinner and table service reservations only, bar seating first come first serve. And on the philanthropy side, the 2026 Lee County Cattle Baron's Ball is set for Saturday, September 26, at Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa.

Neither of these needs the park. Both are the sort of evening that used to fall in the Bandshell's shadow and now stands on its own.

The construction you are already walking past

Riverside is the visible project. It is not the only one, and if you take your usual route from the Farmers Market to Sugarshack you are passing at least two others.

The Banyan Lot, one block away, is currently under construction and will add a splash pad with enhanced lighting and a new restroom facility, complete by winter 2026. Think of it as the small piece of public infrastructure that finishes on the same timeline as the park itself.

The Bamboo Lot, previously available for event overflow parking, closed to public use in December 2025 to begin its own transformation: a public-private partnership with Barron Collier DT Bonita LLC converting it into a mixed-use building with retail, residential units, and structured public parking. The project is currently in the construction phase and is planned to include water access points, a fire pit, bike racks, and restrooms. This is the piece that changes the ground floor of downtown permanently. When you next look for a spot near Sugarshack on a busy Saturday, that lot is where the structured parking will eventually sit.

One block further, Imperial 41 continues to build out the housing and retail base that gives the district a resident population to draw from at night, rather than a suburban commuter one. Imperial 41 represents one of the strongest examples of redevelopment goals becoming reality and is expected to strengthen the connection between Riverside Park, Wonder Gardens, Old 41, and the growing downtown entertainment district.

What the operators are betting on next

If you want to read where downtown is heading, watch what the people who own the busiest rooms are building.

The same developer behind Sugarshack is now building Telephone North and South, two full-scale indoor-outdoor restaurants on the corridor, and has announced HoneyHole Downtown, a live-music-driven restaurant concept expected to open in early 2027. City officials say infrastructure improvements helped spur growth in the corridor, attracting new restaurants, construction and investment. That is three new venues from one operator, all within a short walk of the current Sugarshack door.

On the food side, downtown just added Canary Club, which Gulfshore Life named among Southwest Florida's best new restaurants for 2026. Brandon and Caitlin Schewe have been steadily redefining Downtown Bonita Springs over the past six years, and at their third venture, Canary Club, three-day-fermented sourdough becomes both pizza and pillowy pita, paired with wood-fired mezze. On the water, Bonita Fish Company replaced longtime staple Bonita Bill's in fall 2025, adding an expanded bar and a fresh menu from the team behind Doc Ford's.

Read those together. A live-music restaurant, two full-scale dining rooms, a wood-fired mezze concept, and a rebuilt waterfront staple all placed their bets on downtown in the same window the city took its most-used park offline for eight months. Nobody with capital at stake behaves that way if they think the district loses momentum when the park closes.

What winter looks like from here

The reopening sequence is worth knowing so you can plan the fall accordingly. Riverside Park renovation entered Phase 2 in April 2026 and reopens, fully upgraded, by winter 2026; the Banyan Lot, one block away, is complete by winter 2026 as well. By the time the Holiday Stroll would normally light up Old 41 in December, the park and the adjacent splash pad and restroom are back, and the Bamboo Lot is still a construction site.

That means one final quiet season on the park lawn, and then a downtown that looks materially different by the first cool weekend. Concert Band evenings return to the Bandshell. Farmers Market foot traffic resumes its full loop through the park to the Wednesday dinner spots. And the venues that carried the calendar through the closure keep their new audiences. The park comes back to a district that no longer depends on it, which is a healthier place for both the park and the operators around it to be.

For residents, the practical takeaway is that the summer and fall of 2026 are not a gap year for downtown. They are the window in which the neighborhood's second layer stopped being a supporting act. If you have out-of-town guests coming through August, Rooftop at Riverside on a Thursday and Sugarshack on a Saturday will show them a downtown that reads nothing like the one that existed five years ago. If you have not eaten at Canary Club or Bonita Fish Company yet, this is the season to do it, before the winter crowd arrives and the reservation book tightens.

The fence around Riverside Park is the most visible thing on Old 41 right now. It is also the least representative.
